Mom, I Can Fly
If I am happy, but only in a dream
Have I lived it, or only seen what living seems?
And if all things dissolve,
If all things die.
Why does something in me
still insist:
fly.
for that desire that takes you too high
but no wing ever breaks through blue sky,
on the cloud nine
when we find our all
before we fly
we must all fall
I breathe,
Burnt Icarus doesn’t deny
these wounds are where we learn to tie
our souls not to the distant sky,
but to this breath, this moment -fly.
I rest my questions where the small things lie,
Not every truth is loud enough to cry
You think the measure is how long.
But a single moment, strong,
lived with intention cannot die,
this will outlive the sky.
A life can be short
and still shake mountains wide.
Life may be brief and still
be very much inside.
So I chase it,
chase it hard, wholehearted.
Somewhere between ache and laughter,
between the brief and the after,
that’s where you lived — where it mattered.
That cannot be extinguished or scattered,
not even when your name is forgotten and tattered.
Not even when your dust returns to dust, ungathered.
The grandeur was never in the staying but in the latter;
it was always in the burning and the shatter.
Dreams are magical,
In sleep, we seep into secret seams,
where all of our being gleams within the dreams we keep
What we perceive, feel, and believe exists in dreams,
where we receive the truth so deep.
Between sleeping and dreaming,
we feel there lives the being that we heal and weep.
So let us seize our dreams and see,
become the being we should be, and through the deep we creep.
So before I leave the dream, the night speaks:
“Do not mistake the lamp for light;
nor think the dawn invents the sight.
Do not mistake the shoes for feet,
nor think the road makes walking complete.
You were the traveler from the start;
this life’s the journey — not the heart.
You’re not a soul that came to be —
the world awoke inside of thee.”
Perhaps,
Whether or not I
was the butterfly
or the butterfly was I,
Mom, I can fly.
Mom, I’m home.
Happy. High.
